Planning a Green Wedding

Oh, I love the sustainability buzzword. But how do you relate that to a wedding? They say that (aside from a house and a car) a wedding is usually the single largest purchase a couple will make.

Anyhow, I feel fairly strongly about voting with your dollars and this is a wonderful opportunity to do so. Again, but how? Here are a few ways I’ve found suggested:

  • Don’t wear a diamond on your finger
  • Get married outside
  • Spread the word online and not with printed materials
  • Host your wedding at a location that’s already devoted to sustainability
  • Serve fresh, locally grown and / or organic food at the reception, and label the food as such, to spread the message
  • Serve at least one vegetarian option, and make sure it’s tasty!
  • Try to buy organic flowers or wildflowers
  • Have your bridesmaid’s / groom’smen wear something they can wear again (or donate your clothes to charity afterward
  • Hire a van / bus to shuttle people around. (we were hoping to do this anyways because of the inherent drinking aspect of the location
  • Purchase as many things as possible from small or independent businesses in the area
  • Offset your guests’ travel costs with a donation to a renewable-energy project
  • Oh, and who could forget: drink local wine!
