rachael and the $65 lunch
Saw rachael yamagata tonight. Jon and I debated whether this was the 3rd or 4th time we’d seen her, but i do know this is the first time I’ve seen her with a full band. It was more rock-concert than singer-songwriter-chick, which was cool. We got there early and had front row seats. Photos weren’t allowed so I had to sneak a few covert-style. Sorry for the weird angles.
The venue was really neat too, albeit really expensive. Think cabaret style, with tables, dinner and drinks being served before the show. The show was way too short, but then I’m pretty sure jam bands have ruined me on what an appropriate concert length should be. 4 hours may be too long, but 1 certainly isn’t enough.
It was good. I’m really glad we went. She played a lot of older stuff off of the album that I really like, and played an equal amount of her newer stuff in a different way than I’ve heard it before. I think I’ll have to re-check out the new disc “elephants”, because I’m not sure that I gave it enough of a chance the first time I heard it.
Good, mellow day all around. Jon and I got a late start out after talking with our parents/siblings (hi everyone!) in the morning, and then just wandered about for a few hours. We accidentally had a $65 lunch when it turned out the restaurant that we went to first only served pricey beverages and dessert. Still hungry, we went in search of *real* food. Not the most efficient way to eat, for sure.
Lesson learned – the Japanese tend to use words differently than we do. “dining” may mean “you eat dessert here”. “hamburger” may not imply that there will be a hamburger patty present. in a “non-smoking section”, it’s possible that your table come equipped with an ashtray and fellow smokers all around you.
It’s always an adventure.
