Seoul – first thoughts

My first impression of Korea is that it’s a lot like America. That is, if America was filled with Japanese tourists and the health codes on street food were very loosely defined.

I keep finding myself saying “hai” and “arrigatou” (yes, and thank you — in japanese). Conveniently for my mistake, there appear to be more Japanese tourists than any other demographic.

Three things I have learned so far.

  1. Finding an authentic Korean experience, devoid of American chain stores / restaurants, will be difficult.
  2. KitKat has a Korean knock-off cousin, the KicKer. It’s rumoured to be not very good.
  3. “Hof” is not an awesome type of Korean beverage, but a social custom that requires you to buy terrible food in a skeezy setting. It is not advisable that you seek it out. Our “hof” (Cold Peaches) was a $7 concoction of canned peaches, their syrup, some cherry tomatoes, and ice cubes. Served in a glass dish with a spoon. It was… weird. Pictures to come.

Apparently if you want authentic Korea, you should try and find some maple sap. Go figure!
